On the 10th of October 1977, at 10.30am, the body of Jean Jordan was found near allotments on Princess Road in Manchester. She had been hammered to death 9 days earlier. And the murderer had returned to the body to mutilate it further on the very day that it was found.

Usually killers go back to a body as a form of ritual. But the Yorkshire ripper didn’t return for this reason, he’d left a freshly minted £5 note. The serial number on this £5 note was AW51 121565 and was brand new. It had been sent out in workers pay packets in Shipley, on the 29th and 30th of September. Just days before the murder of Jean Jordan. The ripper knew he’d be tied to the murder of Jean if he didn’t find that note. But he couldn’t find it and was livid. So he took out his anger on the body, he removed her clothes in a fury, searching for the note. He violently slashed at her body and vomited from the stench when her stomach blew open.

But he carried on, even using a piece of sharp broken glass, and a hacksaw to try and decapitate her. This was an effort to make it look like another maniac was on the loose and not tie him to the murder.

Peter Sutcliffe was questioned twice about the £5 notes but “it got lost in the system”.

He was eventually arrested on the 2nd of January 1981 after murdering 13 women. · #serial killer #murder #true crime #peter sutcliffe #yorkshire ripper
